Magazine Stands: An urban institution

While most readers probably get their magazines through the mail by annual subscription, many prefer to pick them up on the street at urban news racks or kiosks. And these newsstands on street corners are one of the great American urban institutions. And not only are these a fixture in cities across the USA, they are also a part of city life all over the world, from Moscow to Paris to Buenos Aires and Tokyo.

In the subways of the world, for example, one of the most common small businesses is that of the magazine stand. Commuters and travelers can pop into the station, buy something to read, and then leaf through their magazine while riding the trains. Or they can buy a magazine along with a cup of coffee, a pack of cigarettes, some gum for the kids, or other quick and inexpensive items that are basic staples for those in a hurry in the big city. One immigrant told the story of how he moved to New York City from a small village in India, and was in need of a job. He found work at a magazine stand in New York’s Grand Central Station, selling magazines and newspapers from a tiny kiosk. His wages were meager, but he continued to build a steady clientele, and as he expanded his customer base, he also expanded his inventory of magazines and other items like snacks and beverages. Within five years, he managed to make and save enough money to buy his own motel, which he ran for several years before selling it and moving into other business ventures. He eventually amassed enough wealth to buy a gigantic house in a rather fancy neighborhood, and he still attributed his start and his success to the curbside magazine vending business he first learned in the subways of New York.

And similar venues exist in every train station or airport in the world, where magazine racks are crammed into available space for those passing through to browse and buy. Hotels and other way stations for travelers are another major venue for the magazine vendors of the world. Many road weary travelers will count on finding a magazine shop open late at night, so that they can pick up a newspaper, a magazine, and maybe a paperback novel to help them relax and unwind after a long hard day of changing planes or fighting traffic on the freeway.

Algericas is a port in southeastern Spain across the bay from Gibraltar. From this town, you can take an overnight boat train to Madrid, a 2 1/2 hour ferry ride to Tangier in North Africa or a several hour drive to the Costa del Sol area and visit the picturesque towns of Marbella, Malaga, Torremolinos, and Porto Banus. If your Spanish cruise docks in the harbor of Malaga, you will be able to take the tour to Granada and visit the famous Alhambra Castle and charming surrounding parks and attractions. Barcelona is located on the Mediterranean coast of northern Spain not far from France. This busy city with a population greater than two million is the largest Spanish speaking port in the world after Buenos Aires. You will be able to capture the Spanish flavor by taking in the traditional bullfight, enjoying a flamenco show, or having some gazpacho and paella at a typical Spanish restaurant.

You can visit the historical cathedral known as “La Seu” in the old town as well as the interesting building nearby; drive or take the cable car up to the top of the hill of Tibadabo, from the heights of which you can see the Pyrenees.

The Canary Islands are a group of seven Spanish islands in the Atlantic Ocean 60 miles off the coast of northwest Africa. The islands are mountainous and have a mild climate with temperatures ranging from the sixties in winter to the seventies in summer. Most Spanish cruise ships stop at either Las Palmas on the Grand Canary Island or Santa Cruz on the island of Tenerife. The islands are volcanic resulting in several black sand beaches.

Santa Cruz is a lively town that may seem more beautiful than Las Palmas. Here you can visit the archeological and anthropological museum, the seventeenth century Carta Palace, and the historical relics of the Church of the Concepcion. Tourists often take an excursion from Santa Cruz through the town of La Laguna followed by a beautiful drive to Orotava and Porto de la Cruz passing by beautiful coastlines, tropical flowers, and foliage. All that and more awaits you on a Spanish cruise.

The continent of South America is the fourth largest continent in terms of land area, spanning more than 17 million square kilometers. It is bordered by water in almost all sides, specifically the Atlantic Ocean on the northeast, the Pacific Ocean in the west, and the Caribbean Sea to the northwest. The South American continent also lies near the Panama Canal, making it very accessible by water routes. The only land along its border is North America to the north.

The continent of South America is made up of a number of countries. These include Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Chile and Bolivia, among others.

There are numerous tourist attractions all over the continent of South America. Topping the list are the various natural wonders in the continent. South America is home to the world’s 2nd longest river, the Amazon. The Amazon Rainforest, the largest rainforest in the world with an unmatched biodiversity, is also found in the continent. It is also home to one of the highest peaks in the world, the Andes. Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world, can also be found here. South America is also composed of deserts, such as Atacama, and several islands, including Easter Island and Galapagos Island.

Aside from natural wonders, man-made creations are also popular destinations in the continent. These include ancient ruins, such as Easter Island’s Moais and Peru’s Machu Picchu. Rock paintings, such as in Serra de Capivara, are also favorite attractions. Certain events are also celebrated in the continent, such as the Carnival I Rio de Janeiro and the Vendimia in Argentina.

There are several places in the South American continent with a booming commercial real estate industry. Most of these areas are metropolitan areas. Sao Paulo, Brazil, being the world’s 5th largest city, is one of them. Sao Paulo is also known as the center of finance in the entire continent. Other cities include Buenos Aires in Argentina, Bogota in Colombia and Rio de Janeiro.

The South American continent thrives on tourism as one of its primary industries. This provides a lot of opportunities for investors who wish to conduct business in the area, and results in a flourishing commercial real estate industry. Nick Sanders 2010 Pan-American Highway Expedition Panama

The last time I spoke to the owners of the Hotel Santana, situated in the old town in Panama City, they were considering allowing pets into the hotel but as you can see from the photograph they have taken this a step further by allowing bikes into the hotel as well! Sara and her team will always pull out all the stops to make sure your stay in Panama is unforgettable but they did a special favor as the owners of these bikes are the intrepid group led by Nick Sanders on their 2010 Pan-American Highway Expedition.In the group there is Nick Sanders, an experienced GP from London, a logistics expert who will drive the back-up vehicle and will deal with the mechanicing and a local Argentinian guide who for the South American section.

The rides generally have have light British or Japanese bikes such as Yamaha XT or Tenere and carry as little as possible as they have carry it all on their bikes

Most days the group of 25 will cover 400 miles with 90% being on good roads stopping at road side cafes during the day and excellent quality economy hotels at night

This journey the length of the Americas began in Buenos Aires and then headed south to Ushuaia before turning around and heading up into the Andes to southern Chile.They then re-crossed the Andes into Argentina before crossing into Bolivia and the highest city in the world, La Paz. The final crossing of the Andes resulted in a coastal drive through Peru and after visiting Lima they drove into Ecuador where they crossed the equator. The next country was Colombia where the only non-road part of the journey was accomplished by a chartered plane into Panama as there are no road between Colombia and Panama.After leaving Panama the group will ride through Costa Rica and into Nicaragua to stay in the colonial city of Granada followed by the short distance across Honduras and Guatemala before entering Mexico. In the USA the route will pass through Utah and Nevada and visit the Banff and Jasper national parks before crossing into Canada to start the Alaskan Highway at Dawson Creek.. At the end the bikers will then ride across Canada to New York before heading home.

Italian food is truly global – from New York to New Delhi, Buenos Aires to Bournemouth, you will find plenty of restaurants serving up pizza, spaghetti bolognaise and Mama’s secret recipe meatballs.

Gambero Rosso in Livorno, Italy is certainly one candidate for the world’s best Italian restaurants. For 28 years, the chef-patron Fulvio Pierangelini has been serving up gourmet dishes such as burrata soup with ravioli of herring and roe and chickpea puree and prawns, against a beautiful backdrop of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Arguably New York City’s best Italian restaurant is ‘Cesca, which offers big, hearty portions of lamb shank and gnocchi with braised-veal-breast ragu. It has a real party atmosphere to match the flamboyance of the food.

Based in Mantova, Italy, Del Pescatore has been run by various generations of the Santini family for over 80 years. The restaurant is known equally for its commitments to both innovation and tradition, offering mouthwatering dishes such as spicy lardo and rosemary, roast pigeon with port and pan-fried foie gras with raisin wine and pears. An interesting fact is that the city of Mantova, where Del Pescatore is based, features in both ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ by William Shakespeare.

Enoteca Pinchiorri is an unintentionally retro-looking restaurant in Florence that, from a cooking point of view, moves with the times. Recently it opened a sister restaurant in Japan and signed up the acclaimed pastry chef Loretta Fanella. Its wine list is certainly something to get excited about, as are its double ravioli filled with burrata cheese and guinea fowl, or peach and lemon liquer gelatine served with delicious meringue and black sesame ice cream.

Run by the same company that owns the Ivy, Daphne’s in Draycott Avenue, London, is beautifully decorated in an understated manner, with cinnamon-style walls and a spacious conservatory at its rear. The service is well-renowned, as is the food, ranging from basic starters such as baby artichokes with lemon and rosemary to amazing mains like tagliatelle with boar ragu. Save space for dessert and choose the tiramisu.

It’s back to Italy with Ristorante Cracco, serving up puntarella rice salad, buffalo mozzarella-crusted oyster with cream and mortadella black tartufo. Chef-owner Carlo Cracco has reinterpreted tradional Milanese cooking in his own unique and modern way. He used to be partners with the Stoppani family with whom he founded the Cracco-Peck restaurant, he is now devoting himself to his personal vision of cuisine. Ristorante Cracco has been gorgeously updated by the architects Roberto Beretta and Gian Maria. Not a lot of people know that Carlo Cracco attended Scuola Alberghiera, opting to study cooking there simply because he liked the look of the purple building the hotel management school was housed in.

If you want real quality and don’t mind paying for it, then try Le Calandre, located in the small Italian village of Sarmeola di Rubano. You can pick up a bottle of 1995 Dom Perignon for around ,000, but the dishes, such as beef seasoned with truffled egg is thankfully cheaper.
