The continent of South America is the fourth largest continent in terms of land area, spanning more than 17 million square kilometers. It is bordered by water in almost all sides, specifically the Atlantic Ocean on the northeast, the Pacific Ocean in the west, and the Caribbean Sea to the northwest. The South American continent also lies near the Panama Canal, making it very accessible by water routes. The only land along its border is North America to the north.

The continent of South America is made up of a number of countries. These include Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Chile and Bolivia, among others.

There are numerous tourist attractions all over the continent of South America. Topping the list are the various natural wonders in the continent. South America is home to the world’s 2nd longest river, the Amazon. The Amazon Rainforest, the largest rainforest in the world with an unmatched biodiversity, is also found in the continent. It is also home to one of the highest peaks in the world, the Andes. Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world, can also be found here. South America is also composed of deserts, such as Atacama, and several islands, including Easter Island and Galapagos Island.

Aside from natural wonders, man-made creations are also popular destinations in the continent. These include ancient ruins, such as Easter Island’s Moais and Peru’s Machu Picchu. Rock paintings, such as in Serra de Capivara, are also favorite attractions. Certain events are also celebrated in the continent, such as the Carnival I Rio de Janeiro and the Vendimia in Argentina.

There are several places in the South American continent with a booming commercial real estate industry. Most of these areas are metropolitan areas. Sao Paulo, Brazil, being the world’s 5th largest city, is one of them. Sao Paulo is also known as the center of finance in the entire continent. Other cities include Buenos Aires in Argentina, Bogota in Colombia and Rio de Janeiro.

The South American continent thrives on tourism as one of its primary industries. This provides a lot of opportunities for investors who wish to conduct business in the area, and results in a flourishing commercial real estate industry. In recent years, there has been a trend shift in the kinds of travelers that visit the area. Nowadays, more affluent tourists frequent the area instead of the previous budget travelers. More and more high-end accommodations, including hotels and rest houses, are being created in the area.

The wide variety of tourist destinations and the low cost of living in the South American continent is attracting, not only visitors, but also immigrants in the area. The soothing environment has resulted in an increased demand for retirement homes in the area. The retiring population is actually one of the bigger target markets for business and for commercial real estate in South America.

If you’re planning to start a business in an area with lush surroundings, abundant natural resources, world-famous tourist attractions and a rich history, try looking into commercial real estate in South America!

From the Aztec remains of Machu Picchu to the white sand beach at Copacabana, South America has many highlights for the foreign visitor to enjoy. It’s often said that the hardest part of booking a cruise around South America is choosing which of the attractions to make a priority. How do you choose between salsa lessons in Buenos Aires to meeting local tribes in the rainforests of the Amazon? You’ll find when you start to research cruise holidays that there are typically two different types of South American cruise. The Around-The-Horn cruises which sail around the Cape Horn often starting their journey in sophisticated Buenos Aires and ending in the cosmopolitan city of Valparaiso, which is a short bus journey from the capital, Santiago. The second types of cruises explore the Amazon river in some detail starting at Manaus and making their way to the Atlantic Ocean. Around-the-Horn Cruises

Starting in the exotic city of Buenos Aires, these 14 night voyages typically take you down the coast to the Cape Horn and end in the port of Valparaiso, Chile, from where you can take a short bus ride to Santiago airport and board your flight home. Some highlights of this cruise itinerary are the Chilean fjords, and Patagonia, a land of deserts and mountains located between Argentina and Chile. A cruise holiday is a great way to explore these areas due to the lack of roads, hotels and other types of infrastructure in these remote, wild regions. Many ships offer day trips to Antarctica from Cape Horn, which can be expensive, but is a once-in-a-lifetime experience if you have the inclination and budget for it.

Amazon River Cruises

These cruise itineraries sail between Manaus, the largest city in the Amazonia area, and Rio de Janeiro or Buenos Aires. The ports-of-call on these voyages are usually small, less developed jungle areas where you can take excursions into the jungle itself, or small cities within the region. Cruise operators typically offer a variety of on-shore excursions, ranging from canoe trips of the region to nature walks or bird watching trips. The ships also stop in some larger cities, such as Montevideo and Buenos Aires, where you can enjoy touring historic sites or shopping. The highlight of an Amazon cruise is your immersion into the tropical beauty of the river and the jungle. Many ships stop at Encontro das Aquas, or “meeting of the waters”, the place where the Amazon’s black waters meet up with tan waters and run for miles without the two colours blending together.

South America is home to lands of fierce mountainous beauty, traces of ancient civilisations, superb tropical coastlines, alluring food and music, and pulsating festivals – in short everything your need for the ultimate travel experience. Lima Peru’s sprawling capital sits in the center of the country’s desert coastline. It’s a grimy, polluted place but one of charm and friendliness with a wealth of compelling architecture and great museums.

Transport:getting there and getting away

Lima’s Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chávez services most international and domestic flights. The airport is best served by taxi as buses tend to be crowded.

Buses connect Lima with Bolivia, Chile and Ecuador as well as all over Peru. They are slow and can be uncomfortable.

Ocean liners berth at Lima’s port of Callao.

Lima is a sprawling congested city and public transport is disorganised. Taxis are plentiful but unregulated. Fares must be negotiated which is difficult if you don’t speak Spanish and taxis can be dangerous.

Micro and combi buses are cheap and the destinations are placed in the windshield. This makes things difficult if you’re not familiar with the city.

Lima is not pedestrian-friendly owing to congestion and pollution. Walking is only advised within neighbourhoods. Between neighborhoods a taxi is necessary.

Climate

Hot and humid all year round with little rainfall.

Accommodation:from cheap stays to luxury resorts

Check on the internet for the range, location and cost of Lima hotels

Events:what’s on and what’s hot

*Semana de Lima between 12-19 January celebrates the founding of Lima in 1535.*Carnaval is celebrated on the last few days before Lent with music, dancing and water fights.*Semana Santa in March-April is marked by processions throughout the city.*Independence is celebrated on 28-29 July. Large rock concerts are popular around this time.* Festival of Santa Rosa de Lima is on 30 August at the Santa Rosa Monastery.

Rio de Janeiro

Rio sits between imposing mountains and the glorious beaches washed by the warm waters of the Atlantic and is a true hedonistic heaven. The rhythm of the samba is rarely absent from this city in which every day is a celebration.

Transport:getting there and getting away

Flights connect Rio with all of Brazil and Latin America, as well as many other major cities. Buses depart for most destinations from Novo Rio Rodoviaria.

City buses are often crowded and struggle through Rio’s traffic. Rio has an excellent, air-conditioned subway system but it only covers points north of Botafogo.

Accommodation:from cheap stays to luxury resorts

Check on the internet for the range, location and cost of hotels in Rio de Janeiro

Events:what’s on and what’s hot *Carnaval is the five-day internationally-famous extravaganza beginning at midnight on the Friday before Ash Wednesday. Dancing, parades, head-dresses and flaunted bodies make up this unforgettable spectacle.*The Fiestas Junina’s is celebrated in public squares throughout June. *August 15 sees music, colorful stalls and a parade celebrating the Festa de NS da Gloria do Outeiro.*Festa da Penha is one of the largest religious festivals in the city. It’s held every Sunday in October.

Buenos Aires

Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires is unique among South American cities in that it radiates the ambiance of the Europe of a more gentile age. But don’t be fooled. You’ll quickly find it also has a trendy chic side and a population that makes flair into an art form.

Transport:getting there and getting away

Buenos Aires is a major transport hub for the southern part of South America and has two airports. Regular ferry and hydrofoil services connect Buenos Aires with Uruguay.

Getting around Buenos Aires is easy. The city boasts an efficient underground known as the Subte and a round-the-clock bus system. Plus the major tourist attractions are near each other so it’s well worth exploring on foot.

Accommodation:from cheap stays to luxury resorts

Check on the internet for the range, location and cost of hotels in Buenos Aires.

Events:what’s on and what’s hot

* Buenos Aires Tango is a tango festival that takes place between late February and early March all over the city. * The Feria del Libro annual book fair celebrates Latin American literature in April at the Centro Municipal de Exposicions. * Mid-May sees the art fair, Arte BA.*More tango related activities on June 24 when aficionados remember Carlos Gard el, the man who made the tango famous. *December features the Campeonato Abierto Argentino de Polo.

Expedia sees that American Airline’s decision to delist its fare on Orbitz’s website is a potential threat for online travel companies to display cheap airplane tickets and discount travel packages. In response to American’s actions, Expedia has moved American fares to the far end of Expedia’s display of available airlines. American Airlines prices are not being shown with other airlines on the Expedia initial result page.

Customers on Expedia’s website have to click on a link to a page elsewhere on the site in order to see American fares. Other airline prices are displayed on the first result page that a customer sees.American Airlines says it wants to increase its online customer sales via its own website, thereby lowering its distribution costs.

American has created “Direct Connect”, its own distribution path, which its wants Orbitz and other online travel companies to use to get flight information vs. using global distribution systems such as Travelport or Sabre. American has to pay these global distribution companies whenever an airline ticket is purchased by a customer using the global distribution company’s services. If American can bypass such companies, American can reduce its distribution costs.

Direct Connect, according to American “provides a direct link into American’s host reservation system to facilitate the availability, shopping and pricing, booking, ticketing, and post-ticketing servicing transactions.”

Expedia says that it is de-emphasizing American fares to show support for Orbitz and in anticipation of a “possible disruption” in Expedia’s ability to sell American tickets when its contract with American expires. Expedia believe that American Airlines’s proposed direct connect model will lead to higher costs and less transparency for customers.www.cheapfares.com

South America is a vast continent of jungles, rain forests and some of the world’s most exciting cities. Miles and miles of fabulous beaches, soaring mountains and a passionate culture that thrives on music and dance make the region a must for a holiday.

Rio de Janeiro

Rio sits between lush mountains and the glorious beaches fronting the Atlantic and is a true city of the imagination. The pulse of the samba is rarely absent from this city in which every day is a celebration.

Climate

Like all of coastal Brazil, Rio is sultry and humid for most of the year. Summer temperatures hover around 28 C. The rainy season occurs from October to January. Winters in Rio feature temperatures of around 23 C.

Check on the internet for the range, location and cost of Rio de Janeiro hotels

Events:what’s on and what’s hot

*Carnaval is the five-day internationally-famous extravaganza beginning at midnight on the Friday before Ash Wednesday. Dancing, parades, head-dresses and flaunted bodies make up this unforgettable spectacle.

*The Fiestas Junina’s is celebrated in public squares throughout June.
*August 15 sees music, colorful stalls and a parade celebrating the Festa de NS da Gloria do Outeiro.
*Festa da Penha is one of the largest religious festivals in the city. It’s held every Sunday in October.

Buenos Aires

With its fading architecture, grand boulevards and old-style cafes Buenos Aires seems like an European city of another era.

Transport:getting there and getting away

Buenos Aires is a major transport hub for the southern part of South America. The city has two airports: Aeropuerto Internacional Ministro Pistarni (known as Ezeiza), for international flights. Domestic and regional flights use Aeroparque Jorge Newbery (Aeroparque) which is just five miles out of town. Both airports can be reached by bus.

Getting around Buenos Aires is easy. The city boasts an efficient underground known as the Subte and a round-the-clock bus system. Plus the major tourist attractions are near each other so it’s well worth exploring on foot.

Climate

Summers are hot with the temperatures reaching 40 C and winters can get very cold. Spring (October to November) and Autumn (March to May) are warm and pleasant. Rain can come at any time but it tends not to be heavy.

Accommodation:from cheap stays to luxury resorts

Check on the internet for the range, location and cost of Buenos Aires hotels

Events

* Buenos Aires Tango is a tango festival that takes place between late February and early March all over the city.
* The Feria del Libro annual book fair celebrates Latin American literature in April at the Centro Municipal de Exposicions.
* Mid-May sees the art fair, Arte BA.
*More tango related activities on June 24 when aficionados remember Carlos Gard el, the man who made the tango famous.
*December features the Campeonato Abierto Argentino de Polo.

São Paulo

São Paulo is the largest city in South America. It’s also Brazil’s most cosmopolitan and boasts pulsating nightlife, fine restaurants and an impressive cultural and arts life.

Transport:getting there and getting away

São Paulo has three airports: São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport (GRU, for domestic and international flights) and Congonhas, (CGH, for domestic flights).

The city is very congested so the subway is the best method of getting around. The buses are very crowded.

Climate

Not as pleasant as other Brazilian cities but generally warm and sunny all year round. Rainfall is highest during the summer months.

Accommodation:from cheap stays to luxury resorts

Check on the internet for the range, location and cost of Sao Paulo hotels

Events

*São Paulo Fashion Week is the crowning event in the Brazilian fashion scene.
*São Paulo Gay Parade in June features a huge carnival.
*Brazilian F1 Grand Prix is in October.

*Semana de Lima between 12-19 January celebrates the founding of Lima in 1535.
*Carnaval is celebrated on the last few days before Lent with music, dancing and water fights.
*Semana Santa in March-April is marked by processions throughout the city.
*Independence is celebrated on 28-29 July. Large rock concerts are popular around this time.
* Festival of Santa Rosa de Lima is on 30 August at the Santa Rosa Monastery.

* Mid-May sees the art fair, Arte BA.
*More tango related activities on June 24 when aficionados remember Carlos Gard el, the man who made the tango famous.
*December features the Campeonato Abierto Argentino de Polo.
