The last of the skiing opportunities are disappearing from the slopes in Canada, the USA and Europe as summer arrives. There’s only one solution; follow the snow south! since the founding of the Argentinian Ski Federation in 1941 things have been, in true Latin American style, developing slowly but steadily. A world away from its counterparts in the Northern Hemisphere, your ski trip can include experiences from partying in the midst of the Argentinian winter getaway of Bariloche to horseback rides and hikes into the middle of nowhere to conquer faraway slopes.

Getting thereTravelling to any of the main resorts can be achieved through fairly simple connections, with a 2 to 3 hour flight from Buenos Aires followed by ground transportation to your chosen resort. Depending on your level and the kind of trip you want, Argentina presents the following options.

Popular ski resorts in ArgentinaCatedral Bariloche is in the heart of the Argentinian Lake district, the biggest mountain in Argentina. The ski resort is outside the popular mountain town of Bariloche, which Argentinians flock to during national holidays. Famous for its huge steaks, red wine and hot chocolate, it’s easy to get distracted from skiing. In general the resort has an intermediate focus, with incredible views to enjoy over the lakes as you ski.

Las Lenas is known for its back-country skiing, with expert skiers coming from all over the world to throw themselves down the challenging terrain, including gullies, chutes and cliffs. Just outside Mendoza, famous for its wine, transport connections are easy and before long you will find yourself exploring the limits of the 230 hectares of ski-able terrain. Heliskiing is also a popular option here.

Chapelco, outside the alpine town of San Martin de Los Andes, has something for everyone. Alpine skiers, ski tourers and snowboarders will all find something to suit in the range of snow-parks, groomed runs, powder bowls and tree skiing. Smaller but just as popular as its bigger neighbour Mount Catedral, Chapelco is well worth a visit.

Smaller ski resorts in ArgentinaMount Castor in Ushuaia is the southernmost resort in the world, a place where you can ski down to sea level on dry, fine powder. Great for nordic skiing, Mount Castor enjoys a longer season than anywhere else.

Las Penitentes is the neighbouring resort to the bigger Las Lenas, a sizable resort with 300 hectares of skiable terrain with a mixture of beginner, intermediate and advanced runs. Watched over by Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas, visitors will be impressed by the surrounding scenery.

Mount Bayo, the pride of Villa La Angostura, is an impressive resort set in a beautiful natural landscape. Surrounded by forests and with a majestic view of Lake Nahuel Huapi, it is very close to the mountain village and it offers skiers 200 hectares of terrain. Visitors will have the strange but wonderful experience of winding their way through the network of bizzare monkey puzzle trees, seen to be believed!

La Hoya, 13 kilometres outside Esquel, is another resort blessed with stunning landscape, a selection of forests, waterfalls and lakes. The aspect of the resort also shelters it from the sun, which gives the resort the benefit of reliable, excellent quality powder snow.

Batea Mahuida resort provides an interesting mix of winter sports and culture, home to the Puel Mapuche community. Since the local volcano became extinct and formed a lagoon in its crater, the Mapuches have resided in the region, and visitors can enjoy their cuisine and get to know their customs. Nordic skiing is popular here.

Caviahue is located at the base of the Copahue volcano, which provides a couple of unique advantages. The first is the 8km descent from the volcano’s summit through back-country powder, and the second is the range of natural thermal baths in the resort full of water rich in volcanic minerals. With a stunning landscape to match, Caviahue is fine example of Argentinian rustic charm.

If you decide to head to the bright lights of Bariloche, the challenging slopes of Las Lenas or the secluded retreat of Caviahue, Argentina can provide the endless ski season that you are searching for. As with any ski resort worldwide, you’ll get the best out of your trip if you have a local guide or arrange a tour with an experienced operator to open up access to those hidden treasures tucked away in the mountains. Make sure that if you do choose to go with someone they have a solid reputation and take no chances; safety on your ski trip should always be a priority. That said, don’t hesitate to explore this snowy corner of the world a little further off the beaten track than your regular ski trip; you won’t regret a ski vacation in Argentina!

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Diego Maradona was given the boot as Argentina’s soccer coach before he could resign.

His stint as coach of the Albiceleste ended far less successfully than his time as a player with the national team. The Argentine Football Association, which hired the former star in November 2008, said Tuesday that his contract will not be renewed. The decision came 3 1/2 weeks after his team, led by star Lionel Messi, was eliminated from the World Cup with a humiliating 4-0 loss to Germany in the quarterfinals.

“Diego shut himself off to any change,” executive committee member Luis Segura said on Argentine television. “Diego has all the right to do what he wants. But so does AFA.”

The federation had offered Maradona a four-year contract through the 2014 World Cup, but Maradona said he would do so only if his entire staff remained.

That was unacceptable to AFA president Julio Grondona. He had asked for several assistants to be replaced, including Maradona’s close friend Alejandro Mancuso. The federation said its executive committee unanimously decided to not keep Mardona.

AFA spokesman Ernesto Cherquis Bialo called the decision “very painful” but said there was no way to solve the impasse.

“The president said that there was a significant difference between what AFA wanted to achieve and Maradona’s aspirations for the future,” Cherquis Bialo said. “There was a wide gap, and it was impossible to narrow it.”

The spokesman hinted, however, there might be a role in the future for a man with an unpredictable history.

“This marks the end of a first chapter with Mr. Maradona,” Cherquis Bialo said. “The doors to this house, as always, will be open to him.”

Youth team manager Sergio Batista was appointed interim coach for the Aug. 11 exhibition at Ireland, which will be followed by a Sept. 7 home exhibition against world champion Spain. Possible permanent successors include two club coaches in Argentina: Alejandro Sabella of Estudiantes and Miguel Russo of Racing.

Asked about the full-time coach, Cherquis Bialo said: “The people who were in the meeting have no name in their imaginations. It has just been announced that the contract with the coach will not be renewed. And so, a new stage begins.”

The 49-year-old Maradona became Argentina’s coach in November 2008, replacing Alfio Basile and taking over a team he led to the 1986 World Cup title and the 1990 final.

He had little coaching experience, and his team absorbed two of the worst losses in the country’s history: a 6-1 rout at Bolivia in World Cup qualifying and the World Cup defeat to Germany.

Argentina attacked with flair in South Africa, with Messi setting up scoring strikes by Gonzalo Higuain and Carlos Tevez. Maradona, dressed on the sideline in a gray suit, was an enthusiastic cheerleader, but that could not compensate for his team’s tactical deficiencies. The loss to Germany exposed frailties on defense and lack of midfield speed.

Messi, widely regarded as the game’s best player, left with World Cup without scoring a goal. Maradona never explained why Messi – he was left to roam the field on his own – wasn’t scoring.

“Nobody ever told me where to play. So I shouldn’t have to tell Messi where to play, either,” Maradona said.

Maradona, who has fought cocaine and alcohol addiction, grew up in a Buenos Aires slum, and his escape from poverty has endeared him to many. But he has worn out his welcome in other quarters.

Maradona ruffled the government of President Cristina Fernandez, who twice invited the coach to meet with her. But cabinet chief Anibal Fernandez said Maradona failed to respond or answer the phone, forcing the president’s secretaries to leave messages.

Fernandez had been openly supportive of keeping Maradona as coach, and one legislator has proposed building a monument to honor him.

Two weeks ago, the federation offered Maradona the chance to extend his contract. But Maradona put off meeting with Grondona to travel to Venezuela at the invitation of a friend – President Hugo Chavez.

Maradona’s relationship with key individuals in Argentine soccer also was tense. He barred federation leaders and businessmen with commercial ties to the organization from practices in South Africa while allowing reporters to enter.

Still, Maradona had many supporters.

“I want Maradona to stay,” Interior Minister Florencio Randazzo said Tuesday in an interview on radio La Red. “We will support his decision. If he leaves we will miss him.”

Added team trainer Fernando Signorini: “I have no doubt they didn’t want him. Maradona is like a stone in the shoe of power.”

Mar del Plata is one of Argentina?s premier surf destinations. Located south of Buenos Aires, this beach town is comprised of 600,000 people. During the summer, it may feel like all of the city?s residents are out on the beach. On the weekends it gets packed with sunning Porteños vacationing from Buenos Aires. This may not be the best time to surf as you may poke someone?s eye out. However, during the week and during the non-summer months the crowds clear out and hotel prices drop. All times of year, the waves are great, the vibe is excellent, and the nightlife is wild. Watch street performers on the beachside Plaza Colón, explore the port, and hang on the beach during the day.

If you aren?t in Mar del Plata to relax or party than you are probably there to surf. Beware that the water temperature varies greatly. During the summertime it is about 20 degrees, in the fall and winter the water?s bitterly cold at around 8 degrees. In the summer a short wetsuit will suffice, but in the winter you will need booties, gloves, and a full suit with hood.

The best swells come from the south or east, but they aren?t 100% consistent so check a swell report or watch the beaches webcam before packing up your surfboard. Jetties can throw some small fun waves, but they are usually better suited to body boarders.

The best time to be in the water is in the early morning, but if you?ve been out at one of Mar del Plata?s excellent nightclubs, you may find it hard to make it to the beach bright and early. Either way enjoy Playa Varnesse, Playa Grande, Waikiki, or Playa Mariano during your Argentina vacation.

Lucky for surfers, there are no sharks in Mar del Plata because there is little ocean life in Mar del Plata. Migrating trash from the beaches sadly makes it into the water, and beware of post-storm runoff from the city.

Argentina is the ideal place to have a blissful honeymoon or a romantic getaway. As the second largest nation in South America, Argentina?s cities are teeming with culture and beautiful scenic views. Couples can find something to suit every taste, from luxury five-star hotels to cozy bed and breakfasts. These attributes and more make Argentina one of the most romantic travel destinations in the world.

Iguazu FallsIguazu Falls, in northern Argentina, is perfect for a romantic getaway. The 275 cascades combine to create one of the most impressive waterfalls in the world. Share a kiss with a rainbow hanging like mistletoe over head as you are splashed by the mighty Garganta del Diablo (Devil?s Throat). Visit the falls by moonlight. Get a bird?s eye view of the falls during a helicopter ride. Aside from being a spectacular, powerful, and gorgeous, the falls located on the borders with Paraguay and Brazil even have a legend of young lovers attached.

BarilocheLocated on the shores of a glacier fed lake, is stunning Bariloche. The area is famous for world class skiing at Cerro Catedral and its outskirts. The town may remind you of a charming Swiss mountain town. This is because the region was founded by Swiss and German settlers who created a chalet style alpine town. Enjoy fresh seafood from the lake. Ski on the magnificent landscape surrounding Bariloche. Try a variety of fondues or even wild boar. Whatever you do, Bariloche is a romantic getaway full of outdoor adventures.

Buenos AiresBuenos Aires is considered the Paris of South America. Yet this distinctive city has character that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Your senses will be overtaken by the sweet sounds of tango music filling the streets, the aromas of the best steaks on the planet, and the scenes of vivacious locals going about their days. Opportunities to make special memories are everywhere. Take a romantic stroll through Japanese and Botanical gardens. Take a tour of a two-century old gaucho ranch. Dance the sexy tango, or watch the experts work it during a dinner show. Visitors cannot help but be swept up in the passionate embrace of Argentina?s sexy capital.

MendozaThe fourth largest city in Argentina begs lovers to enjoy the consistently warm and sunny climate. Beneath the highest peak in the western hemisphere, Aconcagua, is a charming town. Stroll through the historic palm-lined plazas. Take a romantic winery tour by bike, foot, bus, or car. Enroll in an Argentine cooking class and learn to cook for your lover. Why go to Napa Valley when you can drink more exotic and affordable wines, go horseback riding across the stunning Andes Mountains, and enjoy other adventure tourism like hiking, biking, fishing, rafting, and skiing?

Explore – Argentina – Patagonia to the Pampas 4 of 4 – BBC Travel Documentary, recorded 12.02.2011 Simon Reeve leads a team of presenters on a journey through the spectacular landscapes of Argentina, from the vast ice fields of Patagonia to the wide-open plains of the pampas. In the south, a group of indigenous people are locked in a historic dispute with the area’s biggest landowners, Italian clothing giants Benetton; in Buenos Aires, the children of the disappeared are seeking to find out the truth of what happened to their parents at the hands of Argentina’s generals; and in the pampas we meet one of the last true gauchos, whose way of life is being destroyed by an argricultural revolution. On the way, we take in one of the greatest matches in world football, visit a penguin colony on the edge, and meet a bishop with a rather unorthodox interest in Evita. .
