Contrary to popular belief, Christopher Columbus never actually set foot on any area of land that later formed part of the USA. He did, however, raise awareness off the Americas as a whole, and he first set foot on the mainland on what is now Venezuela in South America in the late fifteenth century. This ultimately paved the way for other European ‘explorers’ to venture across the Atlantic to conquer the New World, with the Spanish and Portuguese leading the way. And the rest, as the saying goes, is history. With the influence of European culture mixed in with the native cultures, the whole of South America is culturally diverse, from Patagonia in the south, all the way up to Columbia in the north of the continent. And South America also offers up a fantastic array of cities to rival any other on Earth, and this is perhaps best exemplified with the magnificent Buenos Aires. The cosmopolitan Argentinean capital is considered the wealthiest city in the whole continent, and the city has more than a hint of Europe in the air. With a mix of grand avenues and narrow, winding alleys intersected by beautiful plazas, this really is a great city to wander and take in the magnificent architecture. Before heading to Buenos Aires, you might want to pack your dancing shoes, as this is the home of Tango dancing, and classes are available throughout the year, both indoors and outdoors. And whether you’re a fan of football or not, you simply must head along to watch a Boca Juniors match, with the singing and dancing of the colourful masses at each match every bit as fun – some would argue more so – as the action on the pitch. If you want to venture outside of the main downtown area, head to the pristine, subtropical area known as Tigre, consisting of forested islands spread throughout glistening waterways – and you can even enjoy a lovely picnic on one of the river buses. Throw into the equation a religious theme park at Tierra Santa, Evita’s palace at Casa Rosada and an abundance of fantastic clubbing, pubbing and dining establishments, then you start to realise that this really is one incredible city. You’ll also get quite a lot of bang for your tourist buck in the Argentinean capital, and there are many fine hotels in Buenos Aires that won’t set you back a personal fortune, making the city a great option for every budget.
