1.) Buenos Aires

The first Argentina destination you would probably find yourself in is this vibrant city offers much when it comes to entertainment. The title sequence of Los ires berretines establishes how the viewer experiences the spaces and places represented in the film. Walking the streets of the metropolis like the flaneur, it guides the viewer through Buenos Aires. A gentleman stroller of the streets the verb flaner literally means “to stroll” in French the flaneur is a critical observer of the modern city. Both parts of and apart from the streets he observes and walks through, the flaneur rises out of cultural criticism and production of nineteenth-century France by figures such as Charles Baudelaire. Fldnerie, the act of strolling, signified objective observation for Baudelaire and his contemporaries, a type of early urban anthropology.

This analytical perspective, which at once was a lifestyle, was later taken up in Walter Benjamin’s critical theory, which is contemporaneous to Los tres berretines. Benjamin suggests that the flaneur is representative of the modern human condition as he both examines and interiorizes the urban setting through which he walks. In this sense, the urban setting originally Paris but later any metropolis – is both an exterior and an interior space for the flaneur. Benjamin states (1999) “Landscape that, in fact, is what Paris becomes for the flaneur. Or, more precisely: the city splits for him into its dialectical poles. It opens up to him as a landscape, even as it closes around him as a room”. The metropolis is experienced as an exterior-interior duality: it is an observable exterior landscape that is interiorized by the flaneur. Equipo Lumiton leads the viewer through Buenos Aires in Los tres berretines in a similar fashion to the strolling of the flaneur. The viewer’s fldnerie in the title sequence establishes the film’s sense of place: Buenos Aires as a modern cosmopolitan center. Tim Cresswell (2006) argues that: “The flaneur a figure free to stroll freely along Paris’ new boulevards -has become a central figure in discussions of modernity and mobility”.

Modernity, as represented in the figure of the flaneur, is synonymous with mobility; something exemplified by the sense that what is most mobile is also what is most modern (e.g. the ultramodern and ultramobile ‘jet-set’). Cresswell (2006) states, “It is clear … that mobility is central to what it is to be modern. A modern citizen is, among other things, a mobile citizen”. Mobility or the lack thereof, is central to the plot of Los tres berretines. The ability to move, both socially and spatially, is also a cause of concern as it is “a human practice that threatens to undo many of the achievements of modern rationality and ordering” (p. 20).

This is due in large part to the nearly always present Eusebio (Luis Sandrini).” The only character in the film to move freely between the spaces his family members inhabit, Eusebio carries his obsession with tango with him throughout the film. The representation of the sites of tango as places is markedly different from the way in which the cinema and soccer stadium are constructed by the directorial team. Instead of relying on metonymic external shots to frame the viewer’s experience of cinematic space, place is represented in these scenes primarily through mise-en-scene and the use of character types. Two are particularly salient: both portray Eusebio in direct contact with tango culture. In the first of theses two scenes, Eusebio goes to a friend’s bohemian apartment so that his tango may be performed. Unfortunately, the tango is a failure, causing him to go to a cafe to finish it in the second scene. Beginning with an external shot following Eusebio into the Cafe Tren, this scene portrays the composition of Eusebio’s tango ‘Araca la cana.’

Walking up poorly lit flights of stairs, Eusebio passes a dejected man steadying himself with a mop and a hurried gentleman descending the staircase. Eusebio ascends the stairs, moving presumably toward the source of the scene’s soundtrack, the song ‘Ventanita Florida’ (Enrique Delfino and Luis Cesar Amadori). Eusebio pauses before entering the apartment, allowing the song’s melancholy tone and disillusioned lyrics to further establish textures of place. This shot focuses on the floor, capturing the shadow of the stair’s handrail and Eusebio’s feet, which move with the beat. He then enters the apartment, where a number of young men are circled around the humble room listening to the song. Eusebio then sits down and attentively takes in the two performers’ guitars and harmony. The camera settles in this moment on a shot of him straddling a chair backwards, leaning on the chair back toward a table, where a well-burned candle in a wine bottle, a pava, a kind of kettle typical in the River Plate area that is frequently used to heat water for mate, the quintessential Argentine beverage and an ashtray are all resting. This shot, lasting 12 seconds, emphasizes both Eusebio’s passion for music and the trappings of the bohemian apartment. Briefly shifting to the two performers, the scene returns to Eusebio, who maintains his posture from the previous shot. The song ends and Eusebio stammers the lunfardo word for ‘cool’ – ‘Ma-macanudo.’12 One of the performers then asks Eusebio if he brought his song. He then hands the composition, which had just been scored for the piano by an Italian at the Conservatio Golfo di Salerno, to a man sitting at the piano. The light, allegro piece quickly raises the eyebrows of the men surrounding the piano, eventually leading the pianist to stop and ask, “But… What the hell is this” Eusebio, exasperated, complains that what the pianist played (i.e. the piece scored by the Italian) was not his tango. Eusebio’s friend then tells him that there is only one man who can help him score his tango, the pianist at the cafe.

Later in the film, after borrowing some money from his father, Eusebio takes his friend’s advice and heads to the cafe to compose his tango. The scene begins with one of the few external diegetic shots in Los tres herretines. As a consequence of its specificity, interpolating Eusebio into a sidewalk outside a particular cafe, this external shot functions differently from those used to orient the viewer in the cinema and the soccer stadium. A handheld shot – a type of early attempt at a steadicam technique – follows Eusebio into a Cafe Tren, a cafetin, a kind of tango bar/coffeehouse. Accompanied by a studio-recorded soundtrack of a newsy calling out papers’ names and prices, a horn, and unattributable whistling, this shot shows Eusebio entering the cafe. The scene then moves from an external to an interior shot as Eusebio crosses the threshold into the cafe. The expansiveness of the mise-en-scene captures very few provides the basic structure, the initial focal point, for the construction of ideas, values, and shared experiences by the audience” (p. 51). The image, in the broader sense of the word, of Buenos Aires that Los tres berretines portrays is centered on the viewer’s ability to identify and situate him or herself within it.

For tango, midnight dining and bargain prices, no place is better than Argentina’s beautiful capital Buenos Aires, the ‘Paris of South America’.

Buenos Aires has the cool atmosphere of a European capital with the passion of a Latin-American neighborhood, which makes Buenos Aires vacation incomparable.

The heart of the city is the Plaza de Mayo. The Pyramid of May, the Statue of Belgrano, and the Metropolitan Cathedral are some of the many historical monuments found here. Plaza de Mayo is the center of the Government and many government administrative buildings can be seen here.

Most tourist attractions in Buenos Aires are located in the surrounding area of  Plaza de Mayo. East to the river Rio de la Plata lies the Puerto Madero , a port district. It has lot of restaurants, night clubs, and many of the city’s newest hotels. The main business district, sits northwest of this area. This place is filled with hotels and travel agencies which sets up day trips around the city etc.,

Directly to the south of Plaza de Mayo is the San Telmo neighborhood, which has numerous antiques stores, restaurants, and local bars and tango halls. It also has the museum of modern art, the puppet museum and Museo Historico Nacional (National History Museum).

Further south is La Boca. The world famous El Caminito, a historical street which is flanked by bright and colorful residences and buildings is located here. This street was created by Benito Quinquela Martin and his artist friends as a means of recreating the way old La Boca used to look.

North of Plaza de Mayo is Retiro, an upscale residential neighborhood. It is famous for its train and bus terminals and its high end shopping malls. Plaza San Martin in Retiro is a beautiful plaza around here especially when the jacaranda trees are in bloom in November.

Beyond this is the barrio or neighborhood of Recoleta. The Cemetery of Recoleta, is considered as one of the most famous in the world.  Celebrities, like Eva Perón otherwise known asEvita and former presidents, writers, artists, are buried in this cemetery.The Basilica of Nuestra Senora del Pilar, one of the oldest churches of the city is another important tourist attraction. This neighborhood also features the city’s highest priced upscale hotels.

Adjacent to Recoleta is the neighborhood of Palermo, the largest in Bueno Aires. Beautiful decorated gardens, three artificial lakes and especially the Rosedal which has thousands of varieties of roses are a real treat to the tourists. Also there are many important and historical monuments here which should not be missed.

Once on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, the barrio of Caballito draws tourists and is famous for Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales or the Natural History museum and Buenos Aires’s second cemetery which may be more affordable than Recoleta, but its residents just like the Recoleta’s include high-profile Argentines.

Buenos Aires is more known for its culture than anything else. The inhabitants treasure the uniqueness of the city and are very proud of it. It is a very pleasant city for vacation year around.

6. Bariloche and the Lake District. Whereas the southern reaches of Patagonia are known for their ruggedness and extreme isolation, the northern half of Patagonia is a pleasant, almost Swiss-like region of lakes and green forests rimmed in by Andean peaks. Bariloche, Patagoniaâ??s largest town, though far from being a metropolis, is every year more and more a cosmopolitan place, offering a full range of hotels and services for travelers. A little further to the north, in the neighboring region of Neuquén, trout fishermen will find a network of pristine rivers and streams in the Andean lowlands, many of which are considered world-class in the sport.

7. Mendoza and Argentinaâ??s wine country. Vaguely reminiscent of the Chianti region of Italy or perhaps of Bordeaux in southern France â?? but with the difference that in Argentinaâ??s wine country the highest peaks in the Americas loom over the vineyards. If wine tasting is not attraction enough for you, then scale the Aconcagua. Stop long enough to see the Puente del Inca which, at over 12,000 feet, is a natural bridge over a rock chasm which the Peruvian Incas would use when on silver mining expeditions in the southern parts of the Andes.

8. Ushuaia. The southernmost city in the world and the gateway for expeditions to Antarctica. Itâ??s also the place to visit the mountains, lakes and fjords of Argentinaâ??s most southern region, Tierra del fuego.

9. Cordoba and the Sierras. Though not nearly as imposing as the Andes, the sierras or â??little mountainsâ? of Cordoba have a quieter sort of charm â?? as well as the added benefit of a mild climate which makes them pleasant to visit the year round. Some of the must-sees in the area include Jesuit cathedrals and ruins, especially those in the town of Che Guevarraâ??s birthplace, Alta Gracia. The National Park â??Quebrada del condoritoâ? is also highly recommendable. Itâ??s an open canyon with verdant cliffs that condors use as nesting places and where in the spring months, if youâ??re very lucky, you can see baby condors make their first plunge from the nest.

10. La Rioja and San Juan. The desert regions of Argentinaâ??s West, most noted for two Regional and National Parks, the â??Valle de la Lunaâ? (Moon Valley) and La Talampaya, with red rock formations and narrow canyons. San Juan is also Argentinaâ??s second wine-producing region.

To help you define your priorities when youâ??re planning your trip, hereâ??s a quick list of my five favorite Argentina tourist attractions:

1. Buenos Aires. Number one because it canâ??t be missed. Which is convenient for most visitors since, as the center for transportation in the country, the city would be hard to miss if you tried. Even if you only have a short time, plan on staying here for at least a few days: flexible travelers with lots of time on their hands often find that after several months they still havenâ??t moved on! Things to see and do: Go to a â??milongaâ? (a tango dance hall), the city is, after all, the place where tango began. Have a steak, the best beef in the world. Spend an evening or two in the neighborhood of Palermo with its restaurants, bars and clubs. And if your language skills are rusty, B. A. is one of the best places in Latin America to learn Spanish.

2. The Glaciers National Park. You may have seen photos in National Geographic of these glaciers calving off icebergs and thought that this was one of those exotic places in the world youâ??d never be able to see. Well, think again: Argentinaâ??s glaciers, though in the far south of the country, are these days easily accessible by air and land transportation and the Perito Moreno glacier, the parkâ??s star performer, is so awe-inspiring that even the most jaded world traveler could scarcely fail to be impressed. Mount Fitzroy in the north of the Park is only a short drive away, too. With its sheer rock cliff face, it is one of the Andesâ?? most emblematic peaks.

3. The Iguazú Waterfalls. This enormous waterfall in Argentinaâ??s tropical north, by many accounts the worldâ??s largest, is formed by a confluence of swollen rainforest rivers dropping hundreds of feet off volcanic rock cliffs. Since the falls form part of the Argentina-Brazil border, try to see the falls from the National Parks in both countries. On the Argentine side, walkways take you to the very edge, letting you peer down into the misty void. On the Brazilian side, youâ??re able to take in the whole panorama of the falls from below.

4. Salta and Jujuy. Argentinaâ??s Andean northwest, with its high planes, green valleys, llamas herds, spicy food and indigenous people sporting ponchos. The region is home to some of Argentinaâ??s most varied and rugged landscapes.

5. Puerto Madryn and Peninsula Valdéz. No visit to Argentina should be considered complete without a visit to coastal Patagonia, one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world. In the winter and spring months the Southern Right Whale mates, gives birth and raises its young in the sheltered harbor of the Peninsula. At other times of the year, there are sea lions, seals, penguins, dolphins and even orcas on view.
