The last of the skiing opportunities are disappearing from the slopes in Canada, the USA and Europe as summer arrives. There’s only one solution; follow the snow south! since the founding of the Argentinian Ski Federation in 1941 things have been, in true Latin American style, developing slowly but steadily. A world away from its counterparts in the Northern Hemisphere, your ski trip can include experiences from partying in the midst of the Argentinian winter getaway of Bariloche to horseback rides and hikes into the middle of nowhere to conquer faraway slopes.

Getting thereTravelling to any of the main resorts can be achieved through fairly simple connections, with a 2 to 3 hour flight from Buenos Aires followed by ground transportation to your chosen resort. Depending on your level and the kind of trip you want, Argentina presents the following options.

Popular ski resorts in ArgentinaCatedral Bariloche is in the heart of the Argentinian Lake district, the biggest mountain in Argentina. The ski resort is outside the popular mountain town of Bariloche, which Argentinians flock to during national holidays. Famous for its huge steaks, red wine and hot chocolate, it’s easy to get distracted from skiing. In general the resort has an intermediate focus, with incredible views to enjoy over the lakes as you ski.

Las Lenas is known for its back-country skiing, with expert skiers coming from all over the world to throw themselves down the challenging terrain, including gullies, chutes and cliffs. Just outside Mendoza, famous for its wine, transport connections are easy and before long you will find yourself exploring the limits of the 230 hectares of ski-able terrain. Heliskiing is also a popular option here.

Chapelco, outside the alpine town of San Martin de Los Andes, has something for everyone. Alpine skiers, ski tourers and snowboarders will all find something to suit in the range of snow-parks, groomed runs, powder bowls and tree skiing. Smaller but just as popular as its bigger neighbour Mount Catedral, Chapelco is well worth a visit.

Smaller ski resorts in ArgentinaMount Castor in Ushuaia is the southernmost resort in the world, a place where you can ski down to sea level on dry, fine powder. Great for nordic skiing, Mount Castor enjoys a longer season than anywhere else.

Las Penitentes is the neighbouring resort to the bigger Las Lenas, a sizable resort with 300 hectares of skiable terrain with a mixture of beginner, intermediate and advanced runs. Watched over by Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas, visitors will be impressed by the surrounding scenery.

Mount Bayo, the pride of Villa La Angostura, is an impressive resort set in a beautiful natural landscape. Surrounded by forests and with a majestic view of Lake Nahuel Huapi, it is very close to the mountain village and it offers skiers 200 hectares of terrain. Visitors will have the strange but wonderful experience of winding their way through the network of bizzare monkey puzzle trees, seen to be believed!

La Hoya, 13 kilometres outside Esquel, is another resort blessed with stunning landscape, a selection of forests, waterfalls and lakes. The aspect of the resort also shelters it from the sun, which gives the resort the benefit of reliable, excellent quality powder snow.

Batea Mahuida resort provides an interesting mix of winter sports and culture, home to the Puel Mapuche community. Since the local volcano became extinct and formed a lagoon in its crater, the Mapuches have resided in the region, and visitors can enjoy their cuisine and get to know their customs. Nordic skiing is popular here.

Caviahue is located at the base of the Copahue volcano, which provides a couple of unique advantages. The first is the 8km descent from the volcano’s summit through back-country powder, and the second is the range of natural thermal baths in the resort full of water rich in volcanic minerals. With a stunning landscape to match, Caviahue is fine example of Argentinian rustic charm.

If you decide to head to the bright lights of Bariloche, the challenging slopes of Las Lenas or the secluded retreat of Caviahue, Argentina can provide the endless ski season that you are searching for. As with any ski resort worldwide, you’ll get the best out of your trip if you have a local guide or arrange a tour with an experienced operator to open up access to those hidden treasures tucked away in the mountains. Make sure that if you do choose to go with someone they have a solid reputation and take no chances; safety on your ski trip should always be a priority. That said, don’t hesitate to explore this snowy corner of the world a little further off the beaten track than your regular ski trip; you won’t regret a ski vacation in Argentina!

If you are fortunate enough to be honeymooning in South America between the months of June and September then the opportunity to ski or snowboard the majestic Andes awaits you. The best resorts tie in perfectly with visits to some of Argentina’s most beautiful destinations. Rio de Janeiro based travel agents Dehouche can take advantage of their network of local contacts across the continent to ensure that couples on their honeymoon get the best rooms in the most romantic hotels and cosy lodges. A suggested itinerary for energetic people who are keen on the great outdoors and are contemplating visiting Argentina during the southern hemisphere winter would involve flying into Buenos Aires and spending a couple of nights in a luxurious boutique hotel in the trendy Palermo district. Activities here would include a private city tour with a local guide and dinner while watching the best tango show in town. An internal flight would then whisk you to southern Argentina and the spectacular Patagonian Glacier region. Here you would spend 2 days on a boat getting up to close to these natural wonders, and 2 more days staying in a charming lodge which is ideally placed for hiking expeditions.

The next stop would be the breathtaking Patagonian Lake district, where you would stay near to town of Bariloche and get involved in horse riding and white water rafting, before heading 12 miles into the hills for a few nights in the resort of Cerro Catedral, which is the most developed ski area in South America, with 5000 acres of skiable terrain and plenty of challenging mogul runs and off piste areas for advanced skiers. There are 50 marked runs and 29 lifts, and the highest point of the resort is 6800 feet. The best place to stay is the Village Catedral Resort Hotel, handily located at the bottom of the mountain.

Another flight would take you from Bariloche to Mendoza, the capital of Argentina’s world renowned wine trade, where you can spend a few days in a boutique wine lodge. Dehouche again have all the necessary contacts and will arrange a tour with their local wine expert to show you around the bodegas (vineyards); there will also be a driver so that you can tuck into all of the tasty samples that are on offer! The final stop on this adventurous honeymoon would be another ski resort – Las Lenas, a one hour flight from Mendoza. The mountains here reaches 11,300 feet and this is the best place in the Andes for adrenalin pumping heli-skiing; of the 40 marked runs, 67% are for advanced skiers. The off piste action is what you really come here for though, and Dehouche will make sure you get to enjoy the best of it and that you finish your honeymoon in as action packed fashion as it began.

If you want an adrenaline packed honeymoon in beautiful surroundings then look no further than the many diverse regions of Argentina and Chile. South America experts Dehouche can put together a unique tailor made itinerary to ensure that you have a totally unforgettable honeymoon. You could begin with a few days in Buenos Aires or Santiago, Chile’s buzzing capital city. Here you would stay in the best hotel in town, ideally positioned to appreciate the beauty of the Spanish colonial architecture that is evident throughout the cities. Dehouche will organise a local guide to give you a private tour that will ensure you get off the beaten track and uncover some hidden gems. You could then head to the Atacama, the world’s driest desert. Such extraordinary aridness results in some breathtaking landscapes unlike anywhere else in the world: from jagged canyons to giant sand dunes and salt pillars to exploding geysers. Dehouche can book you one of only 8 cottages in a luxury hotel that is built with local materials to ensure that it fits in perfectly with its surroundings. Activities available include trekking, horse riding, mountain climbing and cycling. You could then fly onto the stunning region of Patagonia, where you would stay in an exquisite hotel which is the only one located within the National Park and enjoys a stunning location, perched on the edge of Lake Pehoe. It is very remote and affords incredible opportunities to really appreciate this dramatic landscape of towering white peaks, blue lakes and enormous glaciers. Despite the far flung location, the hotel has all modern amenities – luxurious rooms, gourmet food, an extensive wine list, a thermal pool and a spa. Activities to partake in include trekking, horse riding, wildlife viewing expeditions and kayaking. After the desert perhaps some lush countryside is in order and a spot of indulgence? Why not head to Argentina’s world renowned wine region tucked up below the Andes stay either on a selected vineyard or perhaps in a luxury hotel in Mendoza itself. Dehouche have a specialist wine guide who introduces you to the regions’ best spots including organising private tastings with the owners of exceptional vineyards – a real treat to hear from the creators themselves!Saving the most exciting activity for last, you would finally hop over the foothills to the Andean ski resort of Portillo. This place is totally unique as there is no town, just the magnificent Hotel Portillo, which contains extensive bars, restaurants and a nightclub, as well as a spa and a heated outdoor swimming pool that provides incredible views of the surrounding mountains. The skiing on offer is generally accepted to be the best in South America; certainly it provides some of the continents steepest and most challenging terrain and plentiful off piste opportunities. The runs themselves are mostly ideal for beginners and intermediates, which ensures that skiers of all standards will have a great time. This is the ideal place to end your wonderfully adventurous honeymoon in South America, every aspect of which will have been carefully orchestrated by the experts at Dehouche.

Let Dehouche arrange your luxury boutique hotel and enjoy a whole host of insider tips on where to truly escape from it all on your honeymoon.

The Perfectly Planned Argentina Vacation requires both an artful finesse and a scrupulous eye for travel details, mixing the romanticism of vacation fantasy and the level headedness of seasoned traveling. Because a visit to the country itself lends one to think longingly about Latin romance, incredible wine and food as well as adventurous geography, the perfect balance between reality and the fantasy of Argentine travel is required. The Argentine fantasy isn’t as far fetched as some other travel visions may be. The food is amazingly cheap, the people friendly and its size means endless land in which to explore lofty mountain ranges and riversides or waterfalls and glaciers. In terms of its fancy, Argentina never sends anyone home disappointed and if anything, is underrated in its extravagance.

Planning the perfect trip to Argentina means several things. It means bringing an attitude that is conducive to South American travel and it means planning a trip that will deliver the things you expect. First and foremost, planning a vacation that suits your personality. While Argentina houses one of South America’s largest cities it also houses some of the most difficult to manage countryside in South America as well. And while a stay in Buenos Aires (or any of Argentina’s other big cities) can be both comfortable and extravagant, without proper planning Argentina can very easily rustle your feathers. If you know you require higher end accommodations and travel, plan ahead. Book nice hotel rooms and have your rental car or driver booked well in advance. Leaving the comforts of home can be daunting and if adventure is what you’re looking for, but not in your accommodations, plan for the things you need. You’ll enjoy a much nicer experience and won’t be turning over tiny details while in the face of some of the world’s greatest natural wonders and cities. With that said, the rest of Argentina is a piece of cake.

Argentina can be enjoyed at anytime of year however planning your vacation around the weather is more than intelligent. For the beach savvy traveler, head down anywhere from December through late February. The weather is hot and the beaches warm. Also, travel to Argentina’s other areas will ensure good weather and thus, great pictures. The more temperate months are slightly more comfortable for travel and April and November are excellent travel months because Argentina isn’t full of tourists and the weather is still almost perfect. For the skier or snowboarder visiting in winter (June – Early September) means some of the best skiing south of the Equator and you can expect days of uninterrupted skiing on the slopes. Of course, to see the sights and beat the crowds, touring the country in winter is a good way to go, albeit slightly cold. The prices are cheaper and you can hand pick your accommodations and they are sure to have occupancy.

Anyone traveling directly to Argentina will arrive in Buenos Aires and no stay in Argentina is complete without a few days in the city. Eat extravagant meals and pay nothing – drink the famous Malbec and buy some bottles for back home. Buenos Aires can be seen in a few days, but don’t make the mistake of running out of film or batteries, or you’ll be kicking yourself if you do. After Buenos Aires, the decision is yours. Like many things, Argentina’s greatest strength is also its greatest challenge meaning that while its possible to see the spectacular Iguazu waterfalls one day and be snapping photos of glaciers in Patagonia the next, the size and geographical diversity means that in a typical vacation it is difficult to ‘do it all.’ Taking into account the weather, and the top sights on your ‘Priority List,’ picking a region is usually the way to go. Heading north to Iguazu and then sipping wine in Mendoza is more than reasonable for a week or so long vacation, perhaps with a day in Salta if you’re lucky. If skiing is your thing, head to Bariloche or Las Lenas and skip cold days in the city when there is less to do. If you’re heading south into Patagonia don’t plan a great deal more because after whale watching in Puerto Madryn and hiking the glaciers you’ll have little time for much else, not to mention very little film remaining.

Your friends are sure to be jealous and your fantasies are sure to be satisfied beyond comprehension. As long as you don’t make the greatest Argentina travel mistake of all and stop eating the steak, you’ve planned the perfect vacation.
