Algericas is a port in southeastern Spain across the bay from Gibraltar. From this town, you can take an overnight boat train to Madrid, a 2 1/2 hour ferry ride to Tangier in North Africa or a several hour drive to the Costa del Sol area and visit the picturesque towns of Marbella, Malaga, Torremolinos, and Porto Banus. On the Costa del Sol, you’ll find numerous resort hotels, beaches, boutiques, shops, good restaurants, night spots, and tourists from all over Europe.

The best resorts with the most facilities are Los Monteros, Marbella Club, and Puente Romano, all located in Marbella. The most colorful harbor area is Puerto Banus,a 10-minute ride from Marbella. Here you can stroll along the waterfront filled with giant yachts and visit some of the best shops and small ethnic restaurants to be found on Spanish cruises.

If your Spanish cruise docks in the harbor of Malaga, you will be able to take the tour to Granada and visit the famous Alhambra Castle and charming surrounding parks and attractions. On your way, you may wish to stop for lunch or a drink at the magnificent La Bobadilla Resort, which is built on a hillside in the style of Moorish village.

Barcelona is located on the Mediterranean coast of northern Spain not far from France. This busy city with a population greater than two million is the largest Spanish speaking port in the world after Buenos Aires. You will be able to capture the Spanish flavor by taking in the traditional bullfight, enjoying a flamenco show, or having some gazpacho and paella at a typical Spanish restaurant.

You can visit the historical cathedral known as “La Seu” in the old town as well as the interesting building nearby; drive or take the cable car up to the top of the hill of Tibadabo, from the heights of which you can see the Pyrenees.

The Canary Islands are a group of seven Spanish islands in the Atlantic Ocean 60 miles off the coast of northwest Africa. The islands are mountainous and have a mild climate with temperatures ranging from the sixties in winter to the seventies in summer. Most Spanish cruise ships stop at either Las Palmas on the Grand Canary Island or Santa Cruz on the island of Tenerife. The islands are volcanic resulting in several black sand beaches.

Santa Cruz is a lively town that may seem more beautiful than Las Palmas. Here you can visit the archeological and anthropological museum, the seventeenth century Carta Palace, and the historical relics of the Church of the Concepcion. Tourists often take an excursion from Santa Cruz through the town of La Laguna followed by a beautiful drive to Orotava and Porto de la Cruz passing by beautiful coastlines, tropical flowers, and foliage. All that and more awaits you on a Spanish cruise.

Many of the cities in Latin America have side benefits that you may have never even considered. For example, the cities of Santiago and Mendoza are perfect for snowboarding and rock climbing in the Andes Mountains. In Buenos Aires, you can learn to dance the tango and visit an authentic estancia. Peru is one of the most exciting destinations in the world and has some of the premiere tourist destinations in the world like Macchu Picchu.

Consider your interests and preference for terrain and select the city that sounds the most appealing to you. Don’t forget that you can also arrange to study in a few different Latin American cities, so that you can get to know a few different regions.

2. Consider Add-on Activities

You can also select add-ons to your educational experience that will offer different skills that will complement your studies. For example, you can volunteer, intern or even participate in a medical shadow program. Activities and classes can also be more oriented towards entertainmment. Some schools arrange classes in recreational activities such as snowboarding or tango classes.

3. Flexible Dates

Another benefit when you study Spanish abroad is that you can choose start dates that take place throughout the year. You can also sign up for courses of various durations. Keep in mind that each four-week block is equal to one college semester. In general, students can learn Spanish abroad for as short as two weeks and as long as eight months.

4. A Variety of Housing Options

While in college, your only option may be the dorms, when you study abroad you can select from a variety of housing options. Many students stay with a host family. Kristen Schulz, an American student who attended school in Cusco stated, “ECELA also did a great job setting me up with a host family. Judith was an awesome host mom. She went out of her way to help me out, showed me around Cusco, cooked great food, and really made me feel at home while I was there.” There is also the possibility to get a shared apartment with other students.

Your explorations of Latin America will only serve to strengthen your understanding for the Spanish language and culture. It is possible to learn Spanish overseas while also creating for yourself an ideal travel experience that you will remember for the rest of your life.

If you are travelling to South America and are stuck on where to go and what to do, an educational vacation can make your adventure more complete if you learn Spanish while abroad. If you want to become fluent in the language, you can take a four-month trip to Latin America and explore the continent while attending Spanish classes. This article explores the possibilities of an itinerary that includes stops in Peru, Chile, and Argentina. You will become more and more comfortable speaking Spanish as you explore the various cities.

Starting Your Journey in Peru

Begin your journey with a one-way ticket to Lima, Peru. We recommend beginning your trip in Lima because the Spanish spoken in this country is amongst the easiest for beginning level speakers to understand. Connecting through Fort Lauderdale, Spirit has low-priced one-way tickets. The advantage of a one-way ticket is that it allows you to keep your options open while you are traveling. Once you arrive in Peru, there are countless entertaining activities. From surfing its Pacific coastline, to eating its famed seafood, to attending local festivals. Further from Lima, you can even take side-trips to explore the country’s jungles.

The next step of the trip would be to visit Cusco, Peru, which is just a one-hour flight from Lima. Cusco is a small city in the middle of the mountains. In fact, this region is over 11,000 feet high, so take it easy the first day you arrive to adjust to the high altitude. Because this area was the capital of the Incan Empire, you can explore ancient ruins, including Machu Picchu. This part of Peru also offers sports like rafting and hiking. Although Cusco is not a heavily populated city, there is still a lot of culture including live music and theatre almost every night.

Visit Various Cities in Chile

Once you have spent a few weeks in Cusco, the next stage of your journey could be visiting Santiago, Chile, which is just about 3 hours away. Santiago is South America’s most modern capital city, so there are many nightlife options including Irish pubs and salsa dancing. Santiago also is surrounded by some of the continent’s most renowned vineyards. If you are in Santiago the right time of year, you can even go snowboarding in the Andes.

Viña del Mar, Chile is about a 2-hour bus ride from Santiago. This is a resort with pristine beaches, so you can sunbathe and enjoy clean ocean air. From this location, you can easily access the famous historic port city of Valparaiso. Many visitors also seize the opportunity to visit poet Pablo Neruda’s quirky house in this area.

Spend Time in Argentina

From Chile, you can move onto two cities in Argentina, namely Mendoza and Buenos Aires. Check out mountainous Mendoza first, as it is just a 60 minute flight from Chile. You will find that this beautiful location in the Andes has a very friendly population. You can relax in this region and enjoy natural wonders which include horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking through natural parks.

Of course, your travels to South America would not be complete without visiting South America’s most famous city, namely Buenos Aires. This location is just a 90 minute flight or 14 hour bus ride from Mendoza. The variety of cultural activities in Buenos Aires are pretty endless and there are many Spanish language schools. And certainly don’t miss dancing the tango. Most visitors also spend time photographing the architecture and attending soccer games with Argentina’s passionate fans.

Conclude Your Trip in the Location of Your Choice

By the time you get to the last month or your trip, there will likely be locations to which you are dying to return. So for the last four weeks, spend some time relaxing in your favorite destination while continuing your Spanish classes. It is important to be flexible and open to new possibilities. After all, isn’t that what travel is all about? Plus, you will have likely met new friends to visit in some of the different cities you have discovered. Recent student Jerry Wang stated, “Aside from learning the language of the countries, you will instantly have new friends in each location to help you get around and for advise on what to do.”

Don’t forget to pack light so you won’t have to worry about lugging around too many belongings. Remember that laundry service is cheap in South America. You want to be freed up to explore, and too many suitcases can definitely weigh you down.

So what would this total trip cost including classes? Budget about 00 per month as this amount of money should allow for food, housing, Spanish school, and your travel expenses. As you can see, you can get a lot for your dollar when you study Spanish abroad.

We recommend signing up for Spanish language schools that provide classes in each city. That way you can spend about 2 weeks in each location learning the language. Alternatively you could search for a new school in each city, but that will add cost (each school will require a new application fee) and time. Ann Glotzbach recently stated in regards to her travels around South America, “Each school offered engaging professors, well organized teaching materials, excellent administrative support, comfortable classrooms, enjoyable cultural excursions, and diverse and dynamic classmates.”

If you are looking to experience the Spanish culture than there is no better way to do that then to travel! Travelling to a location allows you to experience first-hand the nuances of a culture. One gets to immerse themselves in a new environment and soak up as much of their surroundings as possible. Hear the natives speak the language, participate in the local customs and taste the exotic foods. As the saying goes “When in Rome…”

For those in North America looking to experience the Spanish culture first hand some destinations of interest might be the countries of Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Columbia and Brazil. If you do choose to visit one or all of the countries some cities you may want to visit are Puerto Vallarta, Buenos Aires, Bogota and Caracas.

If you are not adventurous enough to explore some of the cities less travelled than a place we would recommend to visit that will allow you to get a taste of the Spanish culture while still allowing you to find plenty of “Americanized” places to stay would be Puerto Vallarta.

Puerto Vallarta is approximately 1200 miles south of Los Angeles on the west coast of Mexico. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean Puerto Vallarta has been a tourist destination for sun seekers for many years. As a result Puerto Vallarta has become very commercialized with many destination “all-inclusive” resorts. Though some travelers looking to get a real cultural experience might view this as a negative, it is actually a good thing. The big resorts allow you to avoid many of the dangers that go along with staying in some of the places that are “off the beaten path” so to speak. This will allow you to avoid things like food poisoning, dysentery and influenza. It is especially nice if it is your first time to the area by allowing you to go out and explore some of the less touristy parts of the city while still having a safe haven to retreat to at the end of the day.

One of the other positives for those just looking to “get their feet wet” as far as experiencing the Spanish Culture goes, is you don’t need to know Spanish. Although you will be able to pick up a few words quickly and there is plenty of opportunity to use them with locals, most everyone also speaks English. We recommend stepping out of your comfort zone and trying to speak as much Spanish as you can while you are there as you will be surprised and how much Spanish you will actually pick up in a short amount of time. Besides, as the saying goes, “When in Rome…” right!?

In closing I would recommend Puerto Vallarta to the person that has never travelled to a Spanish-speaking country before and is looking for a holiday in which they can still live in an American standard of living while being able to venture out and still experience a different culture. You can use Puerto Vallarta as a stepping stone to visiting other countries and cities that are less touristy so you can experience a more authentic Spanish culture.

Wherever you go, whether it is Bogotá or Puerto Vallarta, take precautions to keep yourself safe. Remember you are in a foreign country and despite your best attempts, probably stick out like a sore thumb. Make sure food is safe to eat, water is safe to drink and travel with a buddy. Don’t carry a lot of cash on you and try not to get separated from your group. Remember you want to do as much as you can to make sure you have a positive experience and create memories of a great trip and cultural experience.

Don’t forget if you are going to take the plunge and embark on a cultural journey it’s a great idea to learn some common Spanish phrases to get your started if you don’t know any Spanish already.

This option gives you the benefit of experiencing multiple accents and cultures. Essentially a multicountry program will keep you from getting into a rut. Each time you switch locations, your mind will be reinvigorated.

When you travel through South America, bus travel can be a fine economical choice. In fact, long distance buses in Argentina and Chile are very comfortable and safe. Often you can even take an overnight bus with a seat that almost fully reclines so that you can sleep.

The side benefit of these buses is that you save the costs for a night’s hotel accommodations. Also bus terminals will deliver you closer to cities and this equates to less taxi fares.

One particularly good bus route is the one from Santiago to Mendoza. This trip takes about 8 hours and a fascinating winding ride into the Andes Mountains. However, it is important to note that sometimes this bus line is closed during winter if heavy snow occurs.

The trip from Mendoza to Buenos Aires is also recommended. This journey take about 14 hours, but it is a comfortable and easy through the pampas (plains). Additionally, this particular bus ride is a good opportunity to take advantage of a sleeper bus.

Of course, flights are also a recommended means for traveling once you are in South America. The flight from Buenos Aires to Santiago is particularly popular. If you studied in Argentina and then proceeded to learn Spanish in Chile, this would be an ideal flight.

Because many companies cover this route, there is lots of competition. As a result, you should be able to get roundtrip ticket for only around 0. Other typical flight travel prices are as follows: a plane from Santiago to Lima costs about 0, and a plane from Buenos Aires to Lima tends to run 0 Lima and Cusco are two Peruvian cities that are often combined in people’s travel plans. Lima, of course, offers cosmopolitan attractions, surfing, and world-renown seafood. Of course, travelers visit Cusco from all over the world to see Macchu Pichu and other Incan sites. Additionally, Cusco offers a fresh, mountain climate. One guideline to take note of is not to buy your ticket until you are in Peru. We make this suggestion for two reasons. First of all, flexibility is always important. Secondly, prices are lower when you book from within Peru, particularly with Star Airlines.

Another idea, which many travelers don’t initially think of, is to buy an “open jaw” ticket using Buenos Aires as a hub. Both LAN and Aerolineas Argentinas have a hub in BsAs, so the prices are competitive. For example, a ticket with the route Lima – Buenos Aires – Santiago (or the reverse) can often be bought for under 0.

You could also choose an “open jaw” with Lima as a hub. This travel schedule would take advantage of the competition between LAN and Taca for the Santiago-Lima-Buenos Aires route and, as a result, can often be found for under 0. Be aware, however, that with LAN the lowest prices stipulate that NO changes can be made, not even with a fee. For both “open jaw” options, playing around on Expedia or Travelocity is a good way to find a low fare combination. After all, an hour of research might save you 0 or more.

In conclusion, there are many affordable options once you get to South America to study Spanish abroad. There is no need to preplan everything, as many alternatives are not even available outside of the country. The trick is to relax and be flexible. Once you arrive to learn Spanish in Chile, Argentina or Peru, you can get a feel for how you would like your trip to proceed. South America offers a wide variety of excellent travel options that will effectively transport you between its cities for a very reasonable fee.

When you learn Spanish abroad, your choice of living situation can greatly shape your experience. Unless you already have friends or relatives living in the area in which you are staying, you need to make a housing decision before your departure. It is important to remember that due to the fact that you will be spending a considerable deal of time in this environment, it can influence your experience socially as well as culturally.

Typically, students choose between homestays and shared apartments. However, occasionally, students choose to stay in a private apartment or even a hotel. Keep in mind that a hotel room will be far more expensive that most other options. In fact, the cost of a week in a hotel is comparable to the money that you would spend for an entire month of residency in a shared apartment.

While some people may consider a private apartment expensive, it is far less expensive than paying each night for a hotel room. Yet, this choice of living situation does have drawbacks, for example, you have the added consideration of a security deposit. Often it is challenging to make these arrangements beforehand from outside of the country.

A homestay arrangement is one in which you stay with a local host while you study Spanish abroad. Usually you will take a room in the home of a local host family. Traditionally, you will live with an older couple that has extra space due to the fact that their children have grown up and moved out of the house. A homestay situation is the perfect set-up if you want to immerse yourself in the local culture and practice Spanish in your living environment. On the negative side, however, some students may feel as though they are living with their parents when they opt for a homestay.

While a homestay may be pricier than some other options, keep in mind that you will receive breakfast and dinner each day. After you factor in the free meals that you will be receiving, the price for a homestay is really very comparable to staying in a shared apartment. Plus, receiving breakfast and dinner could prove to be very convenient as you may be eating lunch during the day with other students.

A shared apartment is a very popular living arrangement for those in Spanish immersion school. As the name indicates, this means you will share an apartment with other students. This arrangement has the benefit of being a very social environment. You will get to know other cultures too, as your flatmates will be from countries from around the world. For example, a shared apartment in Buenos Aires might have five students whose origins include Sweden, Australia, the USA, UK, and Germany.

However, there are some negative factors associated with a shared apartment. For example, students tend to be messier than families. Common areas are typically cleaned once a week, however, it is up to the students to cooperate on the other days. If you are uptight abut a messy kitchen, this may not be the best option for you. Also you will be not immersed in Spanish when you are out of class as you would have been in a homestay arrangement.

So what type of living situation is ultimately the best option? For an optimal experience, you may want to combine these options. For example, you could spend the first few weeks of your program in a homestay and then switch to living in a shared apartment. This plan will also give you the advantage of having free meals at home the first few weeks and then going out to dinner more once you have made some friends.

If you combine different living options while you attend Spanish immersion school, you will reap the benefits that accompany each one. You will be able to first have the immersive cultural experience of living with a family, and then transition to having more privacy and socialization time with your peers. Your voyage to Latin America has the possibility of offering you a diverse array of experiences, and it only makes sense to take advantage of that fact.

When you are researching one of the many Spanish schools in Buenos Aires, figuring out where to study in this massive region can be overwhelming. With over 13 million in the larger metropolis area, it is one of the world’s largest cities. As a result, there are seemingly an endless variety of options of where you can stay. It makes sense to learn about the different neighborhoods ahead of time as a little advance research can make all of the difference in the quality of your trip. From an American or European perspective, all neighborhoods are affordable, so big differences in safety and quality of life can be had for a small upgrade in price.

With that fact in mind, let’s take a look at a few of the barrios of Buenos Aires:

San Telmo is famous for its tango clubs and art fairs. Although this district is a nice place to visit, it probably isn’t ideal for a long-term stay. Parts of San Telmo are run-down, and this area can be a bit sketchy at night. You definitely want to spend some afternoons and evenings enjoying the culture of this neighborhood. However, it’s not a great place to live or attend school while you learn Spanish in Argentina.

Centro (downtown) tends to be even more rundown than San Telmo. As with many downtown areas around the world, many businesses that were previously in Centro have relocated to other areas. Of course, the popular pedestrian shopping boulevard Avenida Florida in Centro is worth taking a day trip to visit. However, otherwise this neighborhood tends to be noisy, polluted and not a great choice for your stay. At night it is most unpleasant with its large garbage heaps difficult to avoid.

Another place where you don’t want to miss taking a daytrip is Congreso. This neighborhood is home to some famous sites including the Casa Rosada (Presidential offices) and the Obelisk. Be aware than Congreso is best avoided for those selecting a Buenos Aires Spanish school. More suited for government and legal offices than apartment buildings, the zone becomes relatively deserted after work hours.

If you are looking for an ideal neighborhood, one of your first choices should be Recoleta. This area has a well-deserved fantastic reputation and is truly one of the choice neighborhoods in the city. It is comfortable, safe and conveniently located. Of course, quality is never cheap and living in Recoleta may cost about an additional a week over some of the other options, but this price is well worth it for the added safety alone.

If you can’t find a place to stay in Recoleta, Palermo is the next best option. For security reasons, it is a good idea to look for a place to live that is within three blocks of Avenida Santa Fe. There are lots of bars and clubs in Palermo, so if you enjoy nightlife, this spot could be perfect for you. However, some of the streets in Palermo can be a bit dangerous after dark, so always take necessary precautions.

The nice residential neighborhood of Belgrano is further out from Recoleta and Palermo. Although this is a lovely area, it isn’t particularly interesting to foreigners. However, Belgrano is definitely the type of place you would want to live if you return to Buenos Aires to raise a family.

When you are attending one of the Spanish schools in Buenos Aires, the neighborhood in which you live will comprise a large part of your overall experience. Remember that although going to class will be a significant part of your trip, you will also be spending a lot of time outside of class – doing Spanish homework in cafes, buying fruit at the local market, or meeting friends at a wine bar. It is key to do a bit of advance legwork to make sure that your barrio will be one that you not only enjoy, but also one with high levels of comfort and safety. Fortunately the weak Argetine peso means that you can have both quality and affordability.
