An article about a great Argentine tango singer as well as one of my best internet friends.

To many outside of Argentina and Uruguay, tango is a music associated almost solely with the dance that usually accompanies it. This for the most part being a couple (usually dressed in black) moving their bodies very closely with one another in semi sensual posses; as to ignite not only the imagination but even certain feelings of eroticism. These sentiments arising in the way the male appears to almost caress his female partner, as he and she take steps that do not exclude caresses on her legs that even lead to her being dragged across the dance floor; in a fashion similar to gliding to the melody.

This in fact being what the tango is about yet there is more to this music than merely a dance. This being the case as with most kinds of music which also contain singers who through their voices bring not only lyrics of romance but add a touch of distinction as was the case with Carlos Gardel back in the golden age of tango. It being this Argentine singer whose place of birth is often disputed between Uruguay and France, who popularized the tango through out the world back in the early 30s before his tragic death aboard an airplane over Medallin, Colombia.

The loss of Carlos Gardel undoubtedly was a great one for the music he so much loved. It being much like the loss of Elvis Presley to rock and roll yet the tango continues to this day with new generations of talented singers who continue to sing the words of this music; arguably the world’s most sensual as well as romantic. It being one of these singers by the name of Stella Milano, who caught my attention during my time spent in Argentina. As for myself, I can not claim to have been a fan of the tango yet I was drawn to this most attractive singer from the land of my mother whose voice gave something new to this music I had known all my life; given my connection with Argentina and its culture.

Stella Milano apart from being a woman of physical beauty was one whose voice as well as character lent itself perfectly to interpreting tango classics such as “El Dia Que Me Quieras” (the day that you will love me) and “Cuartito Azul” (the blue room). I for my part however did not become familiar with her talent till I saw and heard her sing in “Vina Del Mar” in Chile. It being then that I became enchanted with not only Stella Milano, as a singer but as a performer of grace and elegance who showed all the qualities of a star; capable of bringing that special flavor to this music so typical of Argentina which through out the world has become synonymous with not only class but higher culture.

I would also find out while in Argentina that Stella Milano was not only a singer of merit and a local celebrity but one whose talents extended in to other fields that included acting in telenovellas both in Argentina as well as other South American countries such as Chile and Venezuela. Stella Milano going on to use not only her singing but acting abilities to perform roles in Argentine versions of “Fiddler On The Roof” and “A Chorus Line”.

As for myself, I presently find myself living in Warsaw, Poland and it was recently that I (much to my surprise) came across Stella Milano on Facebook where I immediately recognized her as the one whom I had heard bring so much new life in to those classics as well as some new songs. Naturally with Stella Milano being a star in her native Argentina, I really did not expect her to have much time to dedicate toward having contact with a person like myself; whom she had never met in person yet I found her to be a very warm person. She being one who enjoys conversing on many topics that naturally include the music she performs so well along with other subjects that make her a truly interesting person; who I am proud to have as one of my many friends on the internet.

Naturally, Stella Milano along with having performed in many places (not only through out Argentina but the world) has recorded six albums; that include such notables as “Baladas, Tangos al Estilo de Stella Milano”(“Ballads, Tangos in the style of Stella Milano”), “Mi Apellido es Buenos Aires” (” My Last Name is Buenos Aires”), and “Tangos a Sabor de Mujer” (“Tangos with The Taste of Woman”). As for my personal opinion of Stella Milano, I would say she is a singer who has brought something truly new to this music which in the past was mostly male dominated. This being with not only her voice but female charisma which makes itself so clear in all her performances; as to be felt by all who should bare witness to this exceptional performer.

Many people choose to visit Argentina because it’s close enough to North America to make for an easy jaunt. The climate appeals to most people and you can choose to visit at whatever time of year you enjoy.

The first step in planning your trip to Argentina is finding an airline flight. You can do this by visiting your local travel agent or you may be able to save some money by booking the flight online yourself. There are many discount travel websites that offer a very easy experience when it comes to booking flights to Argentina or any other destination world wide.

Once the flight is in place you’ll need to think about a place to stay. Argentina has many distinct areas and the hotel prices vary depending on which you choose.

Buenos Aries is naturally a hot tourist stop in Argentina. You can expect to pay more if staying in this bustling metropolis. Even if you opt to stay in a quieter area of Argentina be certain to take a day trip in this area.

If you are unfamiliar with Argentina and a bit apprehensive about traveling there with just a map and your exuberance, consider purchasing a vacation package. These packages include air fare, hotel and even a guided tour of the area. You can purchase these types of packages from any number of sources.

One of the luxuries of this type of trip is that you usually travel with others who have purchased the same package. They will experience the same areas of Argentina that you do and will stay at the same hotels and resorts.

Packages that focus on more than one area are the best idea. If you purchase one of these you may be able to stay in as many as three or four different areas of Argentina. If you were to plan and book a trip on your own you would most likely place your focus on one area and just imagine all of the sights you’d be missing out on.

When you are in Argentina be certain to soak up some of the local ambiance. The people of Argentina are friendly and enjoy when people come to visit. They will gladly give you directions or suggest places to dine at, along with local attractions that you are likely to enjoy.

Don’t forget to visit some of the waterfalls while you are in Argentina. They are truly breathtaking and planning a day trip to enjoy the outdoors complete with a picnic will afford you memories that will last for the rest of your life.

Argentina is a wonderful vacation destination. Start planning your trip now and you’ll be soaking in the warm sun while enjoying the beach before too long.

Unlike the previous whims, whose locations were fixed in specific locations (i.e. in the cinema and the soccer stadium), tango is represented as much more itinerant in Los tres berretines. This is due in large part to the nearly always present Eusebio (Luis Sandrini).” The only character in the film to move freely between the spaces his family members inhabit, Eusebio carries his obsession with tango with him throughout the film. The representation of the sites of tango as places is markedly different from the way in which the cinema and soccer stadium are constructed by the directorial team. Instead of relying on metonymic external shots to frame the viewer’s experience of cinematic space, place is represented in these scenes primarily through mise-en-scene and the use of character types. Two are particularly salient: both portray Eusebio in direct contact with tango culture. In the first of theses two scenes, Eusebio goes to a friend’s bohemian apartment so that his tango may be performed. Unfortunately, the tango is a failure, causing him to go to a cafe to finish it in the second scene. Beginning with an external shot following Eusebio into the Cafe Tren, this scene portrays the composition of Eusebio’s tango ‘Araca la cana.’

Walking up poorly lit flights of stairs, Eusebio passes a dejected man steadying himself with a mop and a hurried gentleman descending the staircase. Eusebio ascends the stairs, moving presumably toward the source of the scene’s soundtrack, the song ‘Ventanita Florida’ (Enrique Delfino and Luis Cesar Amadori). Eusebio pauses before entering the apartment, allowing the song’s melancholy tone and disillusioned lyrics to further establish textures of place. This shot focuses on the floor, capturing the shadow of the stair’s handrail and Eusebio’s feet, which move with the beat. He then enters the apartment, where a number of young men are circled around the humble room listening to the song. Eusebio then sits down and attentively takes in the two performers’ guitars and harmony. The camera settles in this moment on a shot of him straddling a chair backwards, leaning on the chair back toward a table, where a well-burned candle in a wine bottle, a pava, a kind of kettle typical in the River Plate area that is frequently used to heat water for mate, the quintessential Argentine beverage and an ashtray are all resting. This shot, lasting 12 seconds, emphasizes both Eusebio’s passion for music and the trappings of the bohemian apartment. Briefly shifting to the two performers, the scene returns to Eusebio, who maintains his posture from the previous shot. The song ends and Eusebio stammers the lunfardo word for ‘cool’ – ‘Ma-macanudo.’12 One of the performers then asks Eusebio if he brought his song. He then hands the composition, which had just been scored for the piano by an Italian at the Conservatio Golfo di Salerno, to a man sitting at the piano. The light, allegro piece quickly raises the eyebrows of the men surrounding the piano, eventually leading the pianist to stop and ask, “But… What the hell is this” Eusebio, exasperated, complains that what the pianist played (i.e. the piece scored by the Italian) was not his tango. Eusebio’s friend then tells him that there is only one man who can help him score his tango, the pianist at the cafe.

Later in the film, after borrowing some money from his father, Eusebio takes his friend’s advice and heads to the cafe to compose his tango. The scene begins with one of the few external diegetic shots in Los tres herretines. As a consequence of its specificity, interpolating Eusebio into a sidewalk outside a particular cafe, this external shot functions differently from those used to orient the viewer in the cinema and the soccer stadium. A handheld shot – a type of early attempt at a steadicam technique – follows Eusebio into a Cafe Tren, a cafetin, a kind of tango bar/coffeehouse. Accompanied by a studio-recorded soundtrack of a newsy calling out papers’ names and prices, a horn, and unattributable whistling, this shot shows Eusebio entering the cafe. The scene then moves from an external to an interior shot as Eusebio crosses the threshold into the cafe. The expansiveness of the mise-en-scene captures very few provides the basic structure, the initial focal point, for the construction of ideas, values, and shared experiences by the audience” (p. 51). The image, in the broader sense of the word, of Buenos Aires that Los tres berretines portrays is centered on the viewer’s ability to identify and situate him or herself within it.

It’s time to tango! Few dances rival the passion and showiness of the tango, the dance that everyone associates with Argentina. Celebrity dancing shows like Dancing With The Stars and Strictly Come Dancing are popping up all over the world, showing us all that anyone can have a go, but where do you start? Try these useful pointers…

1) Listen to the music a lot to get the “feel”
Familiarity with music gets your body moving nicely to it, and feeling is everything with the tango; experts say that you must really learn to listen to the music before you start to dance. Do it whenever and wherever you can; in the car, at work, just before you go to sleep. If you find after a few weeks that you can’t stop listening, you may have just found a life-long passion!

2) Get comfortable with the basic steps to find you dancing feet
Tango as a dance is very free-form, based in improvisation. However, before you can let your feet do the talking, you need to train yourself in the basic moves and steps. To get helpful pointers and be surrounded by others to keep you motivated, find a local dance school or, even better, dance with someone who already knows it. Failing either of these, don’t let circumstances kill your passion; try finding instructional videos on the Internet, a much easier alternative to reading a list of foot movements or trying to decipher pictures.

3) Persevere…
Like everything in life, only regular practice will get you going smoothly, and tango is no exception. Beginners must devote lots of time to solo practice and it is widely acknowledged that big advances can, and must, be made in tango without a partner. As you “walk your miles”, try to move like you are already an excellent dancer; the dance is as much about attitude and communicating yourself as anything else. You may find yourself more convincing than you think! Also try and make your practice a regular commitment; it is common knowledge that the successful dancers are those that book a month of classes and show up to every one.

4) It takes two; find a partner
Once you’ve put in the time with your own steps, it’s time to get someone else involved. Even though tango isn’t a subtle way to meet people, make sure you dance with lots of different partners so that you don’t get lazy being accustomed to the way one other person dances; everyone is different, and if you are improvising you should be ready for that!

5) More practice; get out there and enjoy your dancing!
Hopefully if you’ve dedicated yourself regularly to the previous steps, you’ll have a group of people with whom you can go out and dance for fun, as well as knowing some good spots. The free-flowing aspect of the dance will come easier with time, as moves need to come automatically from “body memory” and not from actively thinking about them; this naturally only comes with a lot of practice.

Which style to learn?
Tango evolved in Argentina as a melting pot of cultural influences from world-wide immigrants that flooded into Argentina at the beginning of the 19th century. Lonely and looking for company in their new surroundings, the arrivals developed tango as a means to mix and express themselves beyond language. Thus, tango is a portrayal of Buenos Aires and its people. Over the last 100 years many different styles have evolved, including Ballroom, Social and Stage. Many consider the styles to be so drastically different that if you have learnt one, it won’t form a basis to help you learn another.

True or not, the best way to learn Argentinian tango is to follow it to the source. Numerous companies run entire tours based around exploring Buenos Aires through learning to dance the tango. As well as an unforgettable adventure, you’ll be sure of learning a pure-blooded form of the passionate, dramatic and beautiful dance that everyone wants to be good at.

The dance and music from the Tango is a fusion of different types and styles of the immigrants in Buenos Aires in the early 20th Century time.Â, a dancer and orchestra from Buenos Aires traveled to Europe, where the first tango-mania was during the 20th century became Paris.Â, he traveled throughout Europe, the United States and other countries in the world-famous dance today.Â

The expression “It takes two to tango” is a phrase that means the problem can not be done without more than one person and is often used in combination with a slightly negative connotation, or at least mischievous, based on breach of trust or a conspiracy. This phrase was originally a song in 1952 by Al Hoffman and Dick Manning, and since he co-invented to be used in political situations and media, paving the way into the vernacular. Some of the lyrics are “You can sail in a ship itself, a nap or a drink from you. You can get into debt on your own. There are many things you can do it alone. (But) it takes two tango to “… etc.
